Ukie Food Segmant 1

So I have periodically taken pictures of the food I have eaten here. So, I decided to share in form of a blog post haha...

I think it's so funny that you can buy buckets of corn in Ukraine. and 15 Grievna is about 2 US dollars.

Borsch a Ukrainian Classic! I love it so much, and I want to learn how to make it! But it is basically beets and cabbage, potatoes, some carrots, onions, and a meat usually chicken. So delicious!

This is an Ukrainian Classic as well, The men eat salo, or fat, on bread with chunks of garlic or onion. They also eat onions like apples here. It was tasteless, but did not appeal to me, and I don't want to eat it again. But there is often bread and sliced vegetables at every meal. Oh and of course cream, which I don't usually have a lot of, if not at all, because I can't.

I tried an ostrich egg omelet! seriously one of the best omelets of my life!

This is my FAVORITE thing so far in Ukraine! Little Pancakes, which are basically little crepes!

Still to come .... cow tongue, and chicken seasoned potato chips! haha

Sick...and More Sick

I decided to go and get myself sick with bronchitis again...So I have been quarantined....and I am bored out of my mind. I was supposed to go to FHE, an institute dance, the temple to do baptisms, church, and the relief society broadcast this weekend. But nope I get to sit at home! YAY!

Since the last time I wrote though, my time has consisted of school, an ostrich farm, an equestrian center, the lavra, orthodox churches, catholic churches, Lyviv, Ukraine, sleeper trains, buses, big mama, a clock tower, a secret underground restaurant, my birthday, Auschwitz, Schindler's Factory, Kiev Temple, and General Conference...

This is an edited summary I wrote to David about what I did on our Poland and Lyviv Trip. I'll post pictures of everything today...

Tuesday-Taught at school and left for the sleeper train at midnight! Oh boy was that sleeper train an experience...I am sure you know me being a germ-a-phobe just loved it! haha I refused to use the mat on the train bc there was so much dirt and dust that I knew if I even got near it my allergies would probably act up...so I definitely just used the sheet and didn't even touch the second sheet until I was freezing...ya I made it worse for myself than it needed to be but, it was certainly an experience...
Wednesday- We arrive in lyviv at like 10 am and look around lyviv...yes this is my birthday day...we went to a chocolate factory!!! haha I had a lot of chocolate that day. Then we went back to the train station to catch a bus to Poland...We drove ALL night to Poland...the border took forever to cross and I didn't sleep any then either cus I was in the back of the bus...
Thursday- We went to the salt mines in Krakow, Poland! Oh my goodness they were amazing!! I loved the air down there. I felt like I could finally breath!! oh I loved it! Then we went to the hostile...so I love hostiles they are so much fun! It was like a giant sleepover haha..it was great, and it was clean so I was happy! Then we ventured out and went to Schindler's Factory...remember when...So you would think it would be mostly about Schindler, but nope, it was mostly about the war in Krakow and the Ghetto life...it was a great precursor to Auschwitz, very educational and touching...definitely cried a little...Then we got home and then we went to a pizza place..
I loved Poland it was so amazing, so beautiful and the people were much nicer haha...
Friday -  we woke up at like 530 am to drive to Aushwitz...what an experience that was....Then we had a tour of Krakow, saw so many gorgeous and ornate catholic churches! Oh I wish I had time to tell you all the stories and everything! I am just so tired...I may have to just do recordings!
Saturday- we left at 9am on the bus back to Lyviv, and didn't get their until 7pm and then caught a 930 sleeper train back to Kiev!

This week, when I am finally allowed to go back to school and teach, I will teach all week and then I assume saturday or friday night begins our 9 day trip. We will go to Vienna, Prague, Dresden, and Budapest. It should be a blast!

Two More Days

Okay everyone haha, give me two more days and I'll post an awesome blog! Well maybe not but I'll try...Last week my birthday week, we went on vacation to Kravow, Poland and Lyviv, Ukraine. Since then we lost a teacher at our school and we are preparing for the ILP directors to come. So, with eveything going on I have barley even been able to say hi to my family!

But, Saturday I will be watching conference all day with my branch so hopefully after or in between or something I can post pictures and update everyone! Love you all, thanks for waiting!!!

WEEK 2

Well to start off I got sick, I am sick right now and have been sick for almost 2 days straight it's not fun, but I am well taken care of! I get in trouble if I walk out of my room without socks and I've been given hot lemon water, hot raspberry jam water, lot's of porridge...don't mind any of it, but that language barrier becomes a little obnoxious when you are sick haha...

But let's rewind a little!

So, basically Monday through Friday has been....
I wake up I get dressed Orisa has a huge breakfast for me, and we try and communicate :), she only speaks Ukrainian haha...and then I head off to school plan my lessons, teach and then I come home I have dinner with my family and then we will talk or watch tv/movie, or I will talk/skype with people and then it's bed time! That was Monday through Friday. It is so wonderful to have such a nice host family!

So one of the highlights of my week was Dasha telling me she loves me!!!! oh it was so cute and it made me so happy! :) haha She loves dogs so we have watched a few dog movies...and then Dana he loves candies and chocolate, so he is constantly giving me some it's so cute! and he gets upset if I just want a little and to just break it in half haha he wants me to take it all! haha oh and I love their dog nelson he always greets me when I get home and he just comes to sit by me hahaha I decided that I was going to teach him to sit in English, so it's a joke that I am even teaching him english hahahaha.....

Oh! I have to tell you about yesterday my most EXCITING day! haha okay so we woke up and at about 2 we went to a museum park like thing...it was an old Ukrainian village that they have perserved and made into like a tourist museum type thing...which I will be sending you pictures of soon! But ya we walked through the village and I went into my first church there, I of course had to cover my head bc I am a girl and then dana handed me a candle and then I just mimicked what he did...dana is my host brother in case you forgot he is ten...but the church was quite beautiful, and it was nice being in there, there was a nice reverence...I said my own quick little prayer but the details of the building were quite nice. Doesn't compare to the temple though! Which on our way I saw!!!!!

Oh! but Vika told me about a cute little tradtion they have...apparently if a girl is sleeping in any place that is new for the first night. like say the first night here, or maybe my first night in a hotel on vacation, or in a new home before going to sleep I am supposed to say in Russian something like... "I Wish to see my future husband in my dreams" three times and apparently I will see who I will marry in my dreams :) that is cute huh? Oh and on the marriage day they go to the monuments of the three brothers and lay down flowers I guess...so you often see the wedding party around those areas....

Okay so back to yesterday all day Dona was picking and giving me flowers I had two bouquets when I got home! Oh and we ate Borsch!!! and Variniky again sp? ya I have no idea but I love both!!! so much...and oh my gosh I tried the bread with fat and garlic...just a little little little nibble it was nasty! ahahah....well it wasn't that bad but I didn't like it! hhmmm...we brought nelson of course and he ran around all day like a squirrel! I have tried all sorts of different foods this week plain pasta love! lots of potatoes...different cookies and crackers and candies haha....it's been great...the kids like to try and share their snacks with me.

Check my Facebook for more pictures! and I will post more next week, as long as I'm feeling better I will be going to my first pro soccer game on Thursday!!!!

I Promise I wil do better about updating this!

Hello from Ukraine! haha okay here is bits of an email that I sent out to my family...please excuse the awful grammar and spelling, and ya everything about it! I tend to write in the middle of the night here, when I am exhausted and jet lagged and well confused as to what time it really is!

Everyone:
Anyways, I am doing soooo well. My host family is extremely wealthy(I seriously lucked out on that one). I am walking distance form the school and know where everything is. On top of that they are very kind to me and take care of me, for everything. Haha my english is getting choppy, because I have been listening to choppy english for the last few days. They both know english and I will be teaching their kids. I will put up pictures soon. They took me today to an American Restaurant haha, and then roller skating! haha so much fun my "little brother" taught me how to roller skate backwards haha...mostly I just mimicked him. They want to skype with me to you guys one day. Anyways, I don't know how to thank them enough for all they have done for me. I keep trying to think of ways. They have 2 cars and 2 nannies (one for Dasha (little girl) and one for Dana (little boy and the n is pronounced like a spanish n with a tilde). I will be teaching from 3-7 monday through friday. Lunch is at 1 and then russian class if I chose to attend is at 2 ish... I will have to prepare about 3-4 lessons evveryday. Is it weird that I am thinking in a Russian accent now hahaha....

So, in all, the only culture shock I had was when I got off the plane and was on a  bus for about 3 hours and the head teacher and coordinator basically didn't tell me anything. For some reason they don't like to plan too far ahead...so because I knew nothing, I was seeing the worst parts of town, I kind of freaked inside. But, I seriously have the best host family ever! They want to take me every where. The only thing I worry about is not having time to get to know the other girls well, and be on my own more. Because I live furthest away from them all. Oh well I am sure it will work out.

I have tried tons of different foods so far. I couldn't even begin to tell you the names, but everything that I have had has been good. I just have to keep reminding them that I am lactose in tolerant. I feel awful for one girl in my group who can't have glutton. Horrible huh? I don't know how I am going to learn Russian, because I can tell my host family really wants to improve their english. And I can tell they really want their kids to speak it often too. Oh yes Dasha is 4, at least that is what she told me, however, I think she might be 5. I'm not sure. her birthday is December 21st I believe. And then Dana is 10. They are sooo cute! Vika (short for Victoria) is my host mom and she is 26, she had dana when she was 19, and then, Oleg (you would have to hear it to know how to pronounce it) is my host dad, and he works in real estate. Vika works at an electronic store with a friend.

Seriously though, their home is like a wealthy American apartment, or called a flat here. 4 Large bedrooms, small kitchen, living room, and then closets, and two bathrooms, one large and one small. My room is normally dashas room and it is all princesses!!! it makes me so happy to have a princess room haha! Dasha wants to be rapunzel (tangled) I told her I love belle haha!

mmk, so I think I am just going to send this email to everyone, I just jotted down things that I thought, sorry it is a mess. I am probably going to have to work on my english now haha. I did learn quite a few russian words though! Dasha loves dogs, horses, and dolls (barbies/bratz). So she says sebaca (dog) and other words repeatedly.Their dog Nelson goes everywhere with them, even to restaurants haha! He is like a mature wedgie! I love him!

Oh, we had some training today and then we went and got phone cards. They gave us all phones while we are here. We are only charged for outgoing calls, so if on you would like it for emergencies I can give it to you, otherwise call me on skype! I have wifi often, at home and at school for sure, and then many places around here offer free wifi (one of th eonly things I noticed is in english). Then we went to the market and figured out how to tell the difference between fizzy water and still water. Okay so the still water starts with and H, which in russian an H makes an N sound. Therefore I think of it as non-carbonated. Then the carbonated water starts with a C, which makes a S sound, but since it starts with a C then it is okay. Sometimes they are colored water bottles like if it is a green cap it is still, blue means carbonated. Awesome huh?!

Everyone here drinks bottled or filtered water, even natives...uh mostly everything is about the same price in the states. except food, it can be extremely cheap. But their street vendors are fun to look at they even have underground ones. I feel like people on the street are not as hard faced as I thought, but some of the older people have an attitude that can come off as rude. I noticed that men are not gentleman here. They can be very kind if they know you and they are more gentlemanly, however strangers they can just be so rude! Oh i know yes, no, and thank you in Russian, I have used those words often today haha.

Okay, I think this is enough for now! I am so grateful for technology, for facebook, email, and skype! I will post pictures soon and write in my blog. Let me know if you have questions I will answer them when I get the chance to! Miss you all!

UPDATE!

First of all I would like to thank all those who have donated on my behalf or have helped me in this process! I really appreciate everyone and your support!

But guess what! I have my flight dates!!! I will be leaving September 1st, flying out of Houston, and then, returning to Houston on December 19th. I am getting really excited, but I know I am going to miss a lot of people while I am gone. Despite my efforts to remain unattached to home, friends, and family; I inevitably am, and it is making me anxious about leaving. But no worries I will be back, and I am sure the time that I am there is going to blast by like a rocket ship (sorry I didn't want to be cliche with fly by, hahahaha).

And I am going to end with a quote from my sisters that has nothing to do with this...

"You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose!"

Thank you all, hope your having a nice day!!! :D

Frequently Asked Questions

Well, I think it is time to make a frequently asked questions post! :)

First off, I want to make it clear that this is completely a service abroad. I am not going to be paid while I am over there. In fact, I am not aloud to get paid monetarily at all while there, because I do not have a work visa. I will be working and teaching English to the boys and girls there 5 days a week, and then have weekends and a small amount of vacation time to explore at on my own time and expense. :) I leave mid-august, I won't have official flight details until probably the end of July, but I predict leaving August 15th, and then returning just before Christmas. Which I predict to be about December 20th!

I don't know what age group I will be teaching yet, I could be teaching kindergarten age, to I believe 12 year-olds. I will be staying with a host family, while I am there. Did you know they eat their pancakes drowned in oil and not syrup...interesting huh?! haha They usually live in small apartment sized homes. Oh! and if anyone has any ideas as to what gifts I should bring them, I'd be happy for suggestions!!!

Let's see, what else have I been asked a lot? Oh!!!! I know many of y'all thought I was headed to Texas for the summer, originally I was! BUT, because of my grandma I decided to stay in Utah. So, I am currently in Cedar City, working everyday! However, I will be back in Texas at the end of July. So, Texas friends, I have about 2-3 weeks to party before leaving to Ukraine!

Okay, I'll add more as I remember, but I believe that is it for now....

Dear Friend,
I am writing to tell you about an exciting opportunity and adventure I am about to embark on.  I am going to Kiev (Kyiv), Ukraine in the fall semester of 2011, to teach children English through the International Language Program (ILP).The learning and ability to speak English will greatly benefit these  children, as well as their families.  Many of these children come from low social economic families; ILP teachers must pay their own expenses and volunteer their time.  The total cost for me to go is a $2,500 program fee.  As a result, I am asking for your help.  A simple $25 would help tremendously.  If you are able to aid me, please send a donation made to ILP on my behalf.
Because ILP is an IRS qualified 501(c)(3) charitable organization, any funds you donate are tax-deductible.  If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to call me at (281) 386–7043, or email at eb.allsop@hotmail.com , or ILP at (801) 374-8854.  You can also visit the ILP website and www.ilp.org, to learn more about the program and journey I am going on.

I would also encourage you to visit my blog at http://missbrittstravels.blogspot.com/.  I explain why I chose to go on this adventure, and I will update it often with new stories while I am there!
I greatly appreciate any amount that you can give to this cause.  Thank you for your support!!!
                                                                         Most Sincerely,
                                                                                                           Brittany Allsop

For Your Information

Ok, so I have been getting a bunch of questions from people about Elder Noren being in Ukraine as well. So, I just wanted to address it so everybody knows that everything is okay! haha

I will not be seeing him while I am in Ukraine, and I can still write him. Before I even applied to the program I wrote him and told him about it and asked him what he thought. He said go for it, and we both made sure there wouldn't be any breaking of mission rules. There are two missions in Ukraine, one in Donetsk and one in Kiev. So I will be outside of his mission and can still write him. I will never go anywhere near Donetsk, except maybe to Odessa, to the beach (but that is still a good few hours away)! But, I will never be anywhere around him. For friends of you who are not LDS, it isn't that I don't want to see him exactly, it's just against mission rules. On top of that, he is in Ukraine on the Lord's time and has a ton of work to do, I refuse to be a distraction to him in anyway. Plus, I simply wouldn't be able to be around him and not give him a hug! duh!

In the ILP program their are four areas to chose from, Ukraine, Russia, Mexico, and China...Mexico was too close to home, too familiar, I wanted something new! China was just way too new to me...I have to work myself up to travel in China (I'll be ready for it one day haha ). That left Russia and Ukraine. I was always open to Russia, if I didn't get into Ukraine, however I really wanted to travel into more of western Europe, and choosing Ukraine is permitting me to go to Austria, Germany, Poland, Czech, and a couple others. So, everybody knows I did not chose Ukraine to be near David, in fact it made me really hesitate about going, but I prayed about it and know it is right, and I already adore this country! It just so happens to be a plus, that I will get to learn and experience similar things as Elder Noren! Hope this answers peoples questions!

.....or else you will die!

I forgot to preface this whole blog with, I am a horrible writer. However, something about myself, that I am working on, is to become better at expressing myself and to be more eloquent in my writing in speech. So here is hoping that this blog thing might actually aid in that endeavor!

So, I apologize for my bad grammar and writing. I would hate to know that people are yelling at their computer screens because it is that horrible, so please just ignore it and have a little mercy on me!

Also, I learned some pretty silly superstitions and customs that Russians and Ukrainians believe, while at training this weekend!

1. Never sit on the ground! If I do, my ovaries will freeze and I will become barren!
2. If a babushka (a grandma in Russia) is yelling at me in Russian on a wintry day they are probably saying, something like, "cover up or you will die," "or go back inside with your wet hair, or else you will die!" Apparently, I might die if I do anything wrong :).
 3. Whistling inside will make my money fly out the window.
4. The A-OK sign is very vulgar.
5. The letter T in American sign language, is flicking someone off there.
6. Sitting on the corner of a table will mean I will never get married.
7. If I leave the house and then forget something and go back inside, on the way out I must look in the mirror. (Something about my soul getting confused on the direction I'm going and having to catch back up...)
8. Never shake hand through a doorway.
9. They drink constantly over there.
10. Russian and Ukrainian women are pros at walking on ice in 6 inch stilettos and mini skirts.
11. When giving flowers as a gift they must always be an odd number, even numbers are for funerals.
12.  If a guy is gesturing to his friend and flicking his neck with his middle finger, it means he is drunk.

Hello! - Привет

I have created this blog to share my adventures to Ukraine and around the world, with friends and family! (feel free to add me on skype too! eballsop is my user name)

For those of you who do not know...I am going to Kyiv or Kiev, Ukraine to teach English to children in the Little America School. I am going through the ILP Program (ilp.org, in case anyone was curious) and will leave mid August and will return to Texas just before Christmas! I will then have one more semester at SUU before I begin my student teaching!!

I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to teach across the world, to live outside my comfort zone, to teach children, and explore a new way of life. This is something I have always dreamed of doing, and I am beyond excited!

I have training this Friday and Saturday in Provo, and I am simply excited to just begin learning about everything! When I am in Ukraine I hope to learn Russian, I will teach myself as much as I can before leaving, but I cannot wait to be completely immersed in a new language! For those who do not know...Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine, however it is split up about 50/50 of those who speak Russian and those who speak Ukrainian. Most kids grow up bilingual or even trilingual with Ukrainian, Russian, and English in Ukraine.

I just cannot wait to go!!!!!!!!!! :D

In explanation of the blog title "Tapestry of Dreams."

In Disney World's Epcot (one of my most favorite places on Earth :) ), there was a parade called Tapestry of Nations and then the fireworks called Illuminations. Disney World is seriously one of the most magical places on Earth for me. I have billions of fond memories, but the one that has always stuck out and actually influenced my life is this parade and fireworks at Epcot. When Disney was creating the music for this parade they didn't want to have lyrics in just English, they wanted lyrics that anyone that visited could sing along to. With that they made their own language and put it into the song Tapestry of Dreams. The words are simple enough, that anyone even little kids could sing to. They created a sense of unity with a bunch of mumbo jumbo. They were attempting to bring the world together in happiness and love, together as one, and I felt like, when I was there, they accomplished it. Because, that is when my interest was sparked in other cultures, in other people. I wanted to explore, I wanted to learn, more than anything I want to serve the world. As proud as I am to be an American (especially from being raised in the south), I want to help unite the world. I dream of helping make the world a brighter place. With the technological advancements the world truly is becoming smaller, and I think it a shame to not take advantage any opportunity to go beyond one's immediate world and learn of others on this planet.

We are all brothers and sisters on this Earth, and I want to get to know as many of them as I can :).

I named this blog in reminder of that feeling I got when I was little, watching those fireworks and seeing that beautiful globe light up and float across the water. This blog is to record my Tapestry of Dreams...

(Couple of things, the song I am referring to begins at about 6:30 into the video. It is worth watching, but it doesn't even compare to actually being there. Also, it is the London Symphony Orchestra that is playing, again in case anyone was curious!)
