.....or else you will die!

I forgot to preface this whole blog with, I am a horrible writer. However, something about myself, that I am working on, is to become better at expressing myself and to be more eloquent in my writing in speech. So here is hoping that this blog thing might actually aid in that endeavor!

So, I apologize for my bad grammar and writing. I would hate to know that people are yelling at their computer screens because it is that horrible, so please just ignore it and have a little mercy on me!

Also, I learned some pretty silly superstitions and customs that Russians and Ukrainians believe, while at training this weekend!

1. Never sit on the ground! If I do, my ovaries will freeze and I will become barren!
2. If a babushka (a grandma in Russia) is yelling at me in Russian on a wintry day they are probably saying, something like, "cover up or you will die," "or go back inside with your wet hair, or else you will die!" Apparently, I might die if I do anything wrong :).
 3. Whistling inside will make my money fly out the window.
4. The A-OK sign is very vulgar.
5. The letter T in American sign language, is flicking someone off there.
6. Sitting on the corner of a table will mean I will never get married.
7. If I leave the house and then forget something and go back inside, on the way out I must look in the mirror. (Something about my soul getting confused on the direction I'm going and having to catch back up...)
8. Never shake hand through a doorway.
9. They drink constantly over there.
10. Russian and Ukrainian women are pros at walking on ice in 6 inch stilettos and mini skirts.
11. When giving flowers as a gift they must always be an odd number, even numbers are for funerals.
12.  If a guy is gesturing to his friend and flicking his neck with his middle finger, it means he is drunk.

Hello! - Привет

I have created this blog to share my adventures to Ukraine and around the world, with friends and family! (feel free to add me on skype too! eballsop is my user name)

For those of you who do not know...I am going to Kyiv or Kiev, Ukraine to teach English to children in the Little America School. I am going through the ILP Program (ilp.org, in case anyone was curious) and will leave mid August and will return to Texas just before Christmas! I will then have one more semester at SUU before I begin my student teaching!!

I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to teach across the world, to live outside my comfort zone, to teach children, and explore a new way of life. This is something I have always dreamed of doing, and I am beyond excited!

I have training this Friday and Saturday in Provo, and I am simply excited to just begin learning about everything! When I am in Ukraine I hope to learn Russian, I will teach myself as much as I can before leaving, but I cannot wait to be completely immersed in a new language! For those who do not know...Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine, however it is split up about 50/50 of those who speak Russian and those who speak Ukrainian. Most kids grow up bilingual or even trilingual with Ukrainian, Russian, and English in Ukraine.

I just cannot wait to go!!!!!!!!!! :D

In explanation of the blog title "Tapestry of Dreams."

In Disney World's Epcot (one of my most favorite places on Earth :) ), there was a parade called Tapestry of Nations and then the fireworks called Illuminations. Disney World is seriously one of the most magical places on Earth for me. I have billions of fond memories, but the one that has always stuck out and actually influenced my life is this parade and fireworks at Epcot. When Disney was creating the music for this parade they didn't want to have lyrics in just English, they wanted lyrics that anyone that visited could sing along to. With that they made their own language and put it into the song Tapestry of Dreams. The words are simple enough, that anyone even little kids could sing to. They created a sense of unity with a bunch of mumbo jumbo. They were attempting to bring the world together in happiness and love, together as one, and I felt like, when I was there, they accomplished it. Because, that is when my interest was sparked in other cultures, in other people. I wanted to explore, I wanted to learn, more than anything I want to serve the world. As proud as I am to be an American (especially from being raised in the south), I want to help unite the world. I dream of helping make the world a brighter place. With the technological advancements the world truly is becoming smaller, and I think it a shame to not take advantage any opportunity to go beyond one's immediate world and learn of others on this planet.

We are all brothers and sisters on this Earth, and I want to get to know as many of them as I can :).

I named this blog in reminder of that feeling I got when I was little, watching those fireworks and seeing that beautiful globe light up and float across the water. This blog is to record my Tapestry of Dreams...

(Couple of things, the song I am referring to begins at about 6:30 into the video. It is worth watching, but it doesn't even compare to actually being there. Also, it is the London Symphony Orchestra that is playing, again in case anyone was curious!)
